Who is your favorite fictional couple, and why?
Rob Dinsmoor Nick and Nora Charles, the couple in Dashiell Hammett's The Thin Man. Nick's a retired detective and lives in New York with his wife Nora and their dog Asta. Despite the fact he's retired, he and Nora still get visits from his old crook friends and solve crimes. I like the couple because they're on equal footing and they don't tend to judge the criminal element in their midst--just help them lead better lives. Plus, they seem to have a lot of fun doing it!

Hi Rob, I hope it is okay with you if I used your direct writing in my book review of "You Can Leave Anytime"... Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?
Rob Dinsmoor I got the story of my most recent book, You Can Leave Anytime, from my real-life experiences in alcohol rehab in Florida. My newest book, which I'm titling Ageless Dilettante, comes from all kinds of different ideas that have been whirling in my head, including a deep curiosity about the day-to-day lives of people throughout the 20th Century.

Rob Dinsmoor I read great books, see great movies, and the best stuff that I've ver written.

What are you currently working on?
Rob Dinsmoor A book of short stories, tentatively titled "Thirty-Two Dogs," where love meets brutality, and a memoir called "Voluntarily Committed," about life in a drug and alcohol rehab facility.

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?
Rob Dinsmoor Write. Don't write just one short story or book and say you're a writer. According to Malcolm Gladwell, you'll have to write for 10,000 hours before you're good at it.

What’s the best thing about being a writer?
Rob Dinsmoor Having a little corner of the universe where I am in full control and no one can mess with it.

How do you deal with writer’s block?
Rob Dinsmoor I reread something I wrote earlier, something I'm proud of, and say, "Damn that's good!" and am inspired to keep writing. Often I will write down even unfinished ideas, as they sometimes seem to flesh themselves out as I write them.
