Most of my fiction starts with real events, such as the killing of a politician's daughter six weeks before election day, which inspired my first published novel. Typically I twist the details to my own ends, but the core of the story is always something true.

A short story prequel to my series of novels about Duncan Cochrane, an ambitious politician with a bitter family secret.
The story details his primary campaign against Chicago's political machine, when he takes on mayor Richard J. Daley and his stranglehold over the Democratic party in Illinois. I plan to submit it to an anthology of political crime stories in mid-February. Watch my website www.davidhagerty.net and my FB page, davidhagertyauthor, for details.

Write every day. There is no substitute for practice. The skill is much like any other - a sport, for example. The only way to improve is repetition.
Unlike other pursuits, writing draws heavily on the subconscious, I think, so for me it's important to keep my head in a project all the time. Many of my best ideas come not when I'm sitting at the keyboard but hours after, when I'm not thinking about it. However, that only happens if I've seen the work recently.
So carve out time every day, even if it's just half an hour.

During my childhood on Chicago's North side, I lived a mile away from Cabrini Green, its most infamous housing project. When I was a teenager, someone started sniping people from the rooftops. More than a dozen died until the mayor announced she was moving in. I used that premise-politician moves into public housing-as the starting point for "They Tell Me You Are Crooked."
