IQ (as I refer to it) was inspired by a forest on Waiheke Island (The McKenzie Reserve) When I was a kid my grandparents had a lodge/holiday home right on the edge of the forest, and I would sit and look across the forest to the ocean. It was peaceful and it helped me process my thoughts and dreams. One of my day dreams was about a forest like that being home to a young girl. From there I built the Elven city of Arcon.
As for the one I am currently working on, a simple thought came to me as I stared out the window into the rain one night – ‘What if there was a point in our future where we could no longer breath the air outside, if we could no longer feel the rain, the wind on our skin. Where would we be as people?’ It was a troubling thought, a dark thought, but I explored it and a world was born.

Currently about to begin the editing phase for what is hopefully my next book.
I'm also toying with a few chapters for a sequel to IQ.

Listening to music - usually in theme of the genre I am writing. I also just relax, watch TV, read, game, muck about. Eventually the words will be there.

Keep writing. Even just a sentence a day. You'll get better at it, you'll create a story and even if no one ever reads it - you've made that. You created that world, those people - you should take pride in that.

Taking the fragments of worlds, characters and stories and giving them life. You create this living breathing world by nurturing it, helping it grow...then...you let it go into the world and hope there is someone out there that finds beauty in it as much as you do.

I usually take a step back form what I am trying to write, read through a section leading up to it and figure out if the block is because the chapter isn't going where it needs to , or if it is simply because I've tapped my brain out. If it's the former, I go through and tweak. Usually, by then, the block is gone and I can keep going. If it's the latter, then I take a break. listen to some music, play a game or watch some TV. There is usually something, in all of that, that will get the creative juices flowing again
