I would travel to ancient Rome during the time of Julius Caesar. So much of our legal and democratic system can be traced back to the period in the last days of the Roman Republic. Certainly there was a host of ambitious scoundrels and colorful characters ( men and women both ) that have endured the test of time. Women were home educated like the men, and had many rights and privileges in the Roman Republic. They factored heavily into the success of their families; which is probably why I always have a strong protagonist in my novels that is an independent woman. Also, having a military background, I am particularly enamored with the continuous success of the Roman Legions. They were a meritocracy that instilled discipline and 'esprit de corp ' as well as military precision in the ranks of average men . This led to great success on the battlefield. They dominated the larger, more robust ethnic enemies they faced throughout the world. I would use the opportunity ( visit ) to travel along with the players of the day ; Marius, Sulla, Pompeii, Mark Anthony, Crassus, Cicero, and of course Julius Caesar, to see if history got the story " right ".

Where possible, I leave my down time open to explore pleasure reading. So much of my available reading hours is devoted to writing/re-reading/researching whatever book I am working on, that I fall behind on my 'list'. That said, two works that jump out are 'Dictator ' ( Robert Harris ) and ' Brave Companions' ( David McCullough ).

Probably nothing I could attest to...it is no surprise that authors often draw upon experiences and skills sets analogous to their background. You write what you know. I write suspense/thriller espionage, but it is fiction. My goal is to entertain the reader. If along the journey the audience gleans an important dose of reality that adds to the believability of the story ( which induces them to continue ) then we have succeeded.

Discipline. If writing is a creative effort ( and I submit that it is ), then sometimes you just have to sit down and plow through the process.
There is a point where the ideas start to flow again. p.s. I find exercise cathartic. I get my best ideas at the gym when I am breathing hard and trying NOT to think.
