I would go to Hogwarts through the invisible door in the London railway station. I'd wear the cloak of invisibility and learn to play squidditch and warm up my wand. I'd have my own pet owl and dine in the huge baronial hall of the school. So. Much. Fun. And so alive. Hogwarts is one of the best fictional worlds ever invented. Thank you J.K. Rowling, one of my favorite authors for so many reasons!

My life is pretty ordinary compared to that of my characters and their stories. My plot ideas come mainly from newspapers and local television news stories. There is so much going on that lends itself to mysteries. I also am an excellent listener, so conversations and just listening/eavesdropping (like Miss Marple) give me ideas that can be developed into scenes or stories.

Such a great question!
Wow, there are a few really good fictional couples. I think Ross and Demelza Poldark top the list. They have every reason in the world to be unsuccessful together, and yet they are excellent partners who go through pain and hardship, success, drift apart, come back together stronger than ever, and GROW together. It's not easy, but it's real. Both sides learn to give. The Poldark Series is simply remarkable.
In the mystery realm, I love Clare Fergusson and Russ in the Julia Spencer- Fleming series.
Cormoran Strike and Robin (Robert Galbraith aka J.K.Rowling) make a fascinating pair, but aren't a couple. Yet.

OK, this much I can tell you. It is July 2006. Melody is still trying to mend fences with Emma, and invites her and a friend to use her tickets to the International Pinot Noir Celebration's Salmon Bake. Set in McMinnville, Oregon, this event attracts wine connoisseurs from all over the globe. By the end of the evening, there is a murder--someone who at one time was svery close to our heroine.

Something, like the newspaper article that prompted "The Difficult Sister", catches my attention and nags at me and then I make a decision to turn it into something big. I do not get "inspired" to write. I put my rear in a chair and get to work.

Write something every day, even if it's just your journal. Practice, practice, practice, and pay attention, because perfect practice makes perfect.

As a former journalist and now fiction writer, the greatest thing is sharing the story.
From the standpoint of the writing process, the best part is being in the groove...so caught up in it that bombs could go off around me and I wouldn't notice.

I am currently working on Book 3 of the Emma Golden mystery series. Can't tell you the title yet, but it is set in Oregon wine country and readers of "An Unholy Alliance", the first in the series, will see many familiar faces.
I also have a nonfiction project brewing.

My inspiration for "The Difficult Sister" came from a newspaper article I read 10 years ago about a woman who had met a man on line. About two weeks after she met him, she moved with him to a remote part of Montana. When her emails and telephone calls from her sister ceased to be answered, the sister went to Montana to search for her.
The news media is a great source of ideas. People do things in real life that are so weird I could never make them up.

There is very little a good walk or a hot bath can't improve. Both clear the mind. Coffee and a hunk of dark chocolate help too.
