Write the story you want to write, and don't try and write for a particular publishing line, or what you think someone else wants. If you look for a publisher after you've written it, you have a better chance of staying true to yourself and that unique little voice inside you. Also, connect. With other writers, through Yahoo, social media, local writer's groups and support organisations. Writing is an isolating activity, and it is important to feel that connection with others who truly understand what you do. Most of all, don't give up.

I love the times when the creativity is flowing and you can't type fast enough to keep up with the ideas pouring out of your head. That's a wonderful feeling. Especially if you read it back at the end of a writing session and it actually sounds pretty good. Those moments are priceless! I also love getting feedback from readers, especially when they really like or connect with something you've written. That makes all the hard slog worthwhile. And by hard slog, I mean all those days when the writing doesn't flow. When you sit there with a blank screen and a blank mind and think you might be kidding yourself that you can be a "real" writer. If there is even one reader who gets your story and its message, then that's what it is all about.

I'm highly familiar with writer's block, unfortunately. Our family has had a few health dramas in recent years and I find that the more drained I am emotionally, the less I'm able to write. I used to worry and obsess over it, but these days, I try and give myself permission to take time away from writing when I feel drained. Trying to reconnect with why you want to write in the first place is also helpful. Eventually, if you give yourself time and space, the well of creativity starts to fill once again. I can't imagine a life without writing, so I try not to worry too much when "it" just isn't happening.
