I notice lots of details others tend to overlook; in another life I might be a detective! (Except I don't like guns, or odd hours, or violence). So I notice things, and connections, and file them away for later. I might see a strange-looking van and get the idea for a whole book because I think of a story behind it.

Lots of chocolate and tears! Nah, I go for a walk or go do something else. I think it happens when your mind needs a break or you're feeling down about something else. But you can't wait for the muse to show up-- you have to make the muse work for you.

My husband's relatives live into their 90s, and two developed dementia, so it sort of came about from witnessing this kind of decline. The samurai story was important to me because my mother's family descended from samurai,and my mother's clan was an offshoot of the Minamoto clan.

Hi Lisa! The answer is the character's inner voice is very fluent while her spoken English (that the world hears) is broken. I wanted to show that contrast between her thoughts and her frustration at not being able to be that articulate to the outside world. Thanks!
