Hadley Dyer Hi there. Yes, it's based on the Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia, where I grew up. I fictionalized it a bit so I could have my way with geography and for creative distance from real people and places.
Hadley Dyer Most days I simply ask myself a slew of questions about the story and do my best to answer them, whether in notes or by scribbling rough material. Once I vaguely know what I'm doing, I can begin to build a scene, word by word, and then the novel, scene by scene. (It's similar with nonfiction, only I'm relying on research, not my imagination.) No inspiration required, though a little music or reading can help prime the pump when I'm feeling sooky, as we say Down East, about getting started.
Hadley Dyer I tend not to get writer's block because I always give myself permission to skip to a different part of the story -- a.k.a. "productive procrastination." There's always *something* you can be working on, even if it's just a bit of description or a writing exercise. Solutions to problems have a way of presenting themselves after simmering at the back of your mind for long enough.
