Christophor Rick That's a tough one as I don't read much in the way of romance or romantic stories. There are plenty of couples that have interesting stories elsewhere though, like Aragorn and Arwen in The Lord of the Rings, Wesley and Buttercup in The Princess Bride, Oberon and Titania in A Midsummer Night's Dream... Sci-fi has its fair share of good ones as well, Aeryn Sun and John Crichton (Farscape), Han and Leia, Zoe & Wash (Firefly), Mal and Inara (Firefly) and even Frye and Leela (Futurama).
Christophor Rick As a kid I read a lot of Sci-Fi and Fantasy. One of my favorites was Piers Anthony's Incarnations of Immortality. That definitely helped influence the characters in Do Diligence. But that story was also a bigger telling of a short story I had done where I had friends on LiveJournal each give me five words/phrases/names and I would weave them all into a story in five days. There is probably some of my Catholic upbringing in there as well since the book sort of "rewrites all of human history and religion at once" (a phrase one of my pre-readers used to describe what she felt of the book).
Christophor Rick The Journey of Why was inspired by a short student film I was watching. I can't even find a link to it anymore but in a flash I grabbed a notebook and started writing and had five notebook pages in minutes. Other times the idea stews for yeas, Sins & Virtues sat on my desktop for seven years before I finally got round to writing the first book and then when I did, it exploded into a much bigger story than I had first thought. Sometimes, I just turn on the laptop, read the last few paragraphs of what I wrote and that's enough to get me moving.
Christophor Rick The reaction of writers to the story, whether it be anger, happiness, shock, or whatever. It's that visceral emotional reaction that makes writing worth it. Everything else is unimportant. If I get one person to read something and feel something for a character then I feel I have done it right.
Christophor Rick I take some time to clear my mind through meditation. Sometimes that works, sometimes I have to actually go DO something else because it is keeping me from writing. Figuring out what it is that is keeping me from writing is the hardest part some days. Am I afraid it will suck? Am I afraid I'll run out of words after the first 100? Am I just being lazy? Once I've found the source, I fix it and get back to work.
Christophor Rick Finishing up Revelations, Book II in the Journey of Why series. After that I'm going to move on to a couple Patreon projects, the first of which will take the scripts I wrote for my web series Not So Super, and turn them into narrative forms. Each season of the series will effectively become its own book then and each episode will be released monthly. Stay tuned!
Christophor Rick Write every day. It doesn't matter if it's 100 or 10,000 words. It doesn't matter if you keep it, toss it or completely rework it. Just do it every day. I read some books about writing when I was starting out and found that using a piece of cardboard on my desk and recording the date and the number of words was an effect motivator. Even after three novels, I still need to do this at times to keep moving forward every day.
