Vena Cork I was thinking about my father who died in his forties, and feeling sad about all the things he missed out on.
Vena Cork When one of my daughters was fourteen she was stalked for several years. The inspiration for my first novel, Thorn, came from this, although, as with most ideas, this was a jumping off point, and what happened to us, bore no relation to anything that happens in Thorn.
It's very hard to know what inspires a book. Sometimes the germ of an idea turns into something entirely different. Sometimes writing a novel is like doing automatic writing - you're the medium, but who knows where the message comes from.
Vena Cork I'm working on a mystery novel set in the present but also in the past. It has it's roots in my own family history and has involved me travelling back into my own past.
I'm also planning a novella in which Rosa Thorn, the main characte in the Thorn trilogy returns.
Vena Cork Keep going even when the going is tough.
And EDIT! Then edit some more. Less is more.
Vena Cork The best thing about being writer is making something out of nothing, and also being my own boss. There's also a sense that everything I do, see or experience can, if I wish, become part of my work. I can make something out of it.
Vena Cork It depends whether it's short writer's block or long writer's block. if I'm struck on a particular moment in the plot I reread any notes I've made and often this clarifies what the problem is and how to solve it. If however I'm stuck because Iv'e been away from writing for a while for whatever reason, then I have to start at the beginning and read the whole thing again and try to immerse myself into the world that it can at first seem I've lost. Sometimes I'm really surprised about things that have happened in the book. It's like someone else has written it. Fortunately at some point the light bulb goes on and I'm up and running again.
