Joe Kelley The idea for REBECCA SCOTT was a long time brewing. There were so many mystery novels with superficial characters whose primary function was to serve the plot, that I began to approach a novel from the other way around. The plot, of course, was important, but what if the characters, especially the female and male leads, came together and developed relationships that went beyond the mystery or crime or romance novel. There was nothing original about this idea, of course, as writers like Ruth Rendell and Patricia Highsmith have done it as a matter of course. But for me, it was a way of getting going, breaking out of the mold and trying to make my writing more interesting and different.
