LouAnne Johnson Actually, I prefer to read about ideas or individual characters rather than couples because I grow so weary of happily ever after or the opposite. For example, some books I have enjoyed recently are Nothing to Be Frightened of by Julian Barnes and Fraud by Anita Brookner.
LouAnne Johnson Read, read, read. Read everything. You can learn as much from bad writing as you can from good. After a while, you won't be able to read bad writing. Your requirements will change. An editor gave me some good advice once that I will pass on: You can look at writing as a business or as an art. If you look at it as a business, you write what sells and you sell it. If you look at writing as an art, you write what is in your heart. Maybe it sells. Maybe it doesn't. But selling isn't the point. It's the writing itself. Now you know why I'm not rich. Ha.
