Read. Read a lot of books. Also read a lot of short stories. Don't limit yourself to one genre or style, so read widely.
And practice writing a lot. Pay attention to the ideas that come your way, and have a place, you store your ideas, whether in a device or in a notebook.

I have just written a collection of flash fiction stories, titled "Memoirs of a Serial Best Man" which will be released soon. I got the idea when I was at a wedding with a group of friends, and one of them was a groomsman and he was being teased because he had been a groomsman or best man at several other weddings. SO I decided to write a collection of stories of his adventures at different weddings that he had been asked to take part in.

I read lots of other things written by other people. I listen to music, I listen to other people's conversations. I can get inspired any time, sometimes I even dream about a story!

Take a break from working on the book for a couple of days. Take a walk, listen to music, eat chocolate, read a book by an author you admire. Do all your pending chores (I've had mental breakthroughs while washing the dishes), then come back to your writing with a refreshed mind. If you want to, you can skip the particular niggling bit of the story and work on something else. Once you get into the flow, you'll be fine!
