From reality. While fly fishing I got to know many people, mostly in Scandinavia, some in Germany, about whom I really wanted to write. I believe that their microscosm reveals much about our contemporary society.

That varies. Mostly I meet people who are so interesting to me that I use them as models for my fiction. Research is hugely important to me. When I have time I ride the subway and roam the city. Time and time again you meet people who you would have never been able to conjure up only from your imagination.
Sometimes I’m also inspired by newspaper articles or books. I’m very interested in economic interdependencies. My novel „Die Macht des Geldes“ deals with these contexts.
The Battle of Stalingrad has determined years of my life. The question how far people can be pushed to the limit in an extreme situation gripped my imagination and occupied me for years.

Right now I’m giving the finishing touch to my new novel. It is about a man who desperately wishes to live in the wilderness, even though he lacks every skill required to survive. A Don Quijote of fly fishing.
Additionally I’m working on a screenplay about the Nibelungen saga which is scheduled to be made into a movie next year.

Give yourselves the chance to learn and make mistakes. Almost no one writes a masterpiece at the first attempt. Those who do usually have great problems with their second book.
Read your literary idols again and again. Inhale them. Great authors started with transcribing chapters from the works of other great authors in order to acquire their style of writing.

To me, writing means to observe the world. Principally humans. Every human being is a whole universe. One could write a monumental work about his world of thought, his unconciousness, his entanglements, his ambivalence, his hopes and fears. I always start with the character. Starting from the character the whole story emerges with its twists and turns, its arcs of suspense.
Writing means to me to be close to reality, to pour it into the page through my own subjective filter. Writing means freedom. One needs nothing but a sheet of paper and a pencil. With those you can create an immortal work. One should never forget that.

I work out, mostly tai chi, but also cycling and fly fishing. Nothing inspires me as much, nothing gives me as much freedom as spending time within nature, espescially while hunting fish. Writing and hunting have a lot in common. You sneak up to your next story, you watch, stalk and circle your idea. Any wrong thought could frighten it away, but you keep up with it, you pursue it with patience and persistance.
Often your first ideas will be bad, but they are necessary. Sometimes they might even turn into your best ideas. You have to allow yourself to make mistakes, that’s the fastest way to disperse writer’s blocks.
