There is no best thing about being a writer. That is like asking someone what is the best thing about being able to see or hear. If you have never experienced blindness or deafness as a comparison, how can you know what is the best thing about seeing and hearing? Or, as a great Eastern sage once said, how do you describe a peach to someone who has never taken a bite of one?
I write because I have to, pure and simple. After wading through the hoards of well-intentioned friends and family telling me how and what to write, I have reached an age of Roger Murtaugh, where I am "too old for this shit," and the words are simply there. There is nothing good or bad, best or worst, about this process. It simply is.

It really is as simple as sitting in front of the keyboard and pushing words around on a blank page until they work. Nothing else has worked for me. Writing is about starting, even if you don't know where you're going.

Stop aspiring to write and just write. Aspiration, to me, always implies inaction. I've aspired to do many things--play trumpet, run a marathon--but the only thing I've actually done is write. And the writing began when I stopped thinking of myself as an aspiring writer and simply wrote.
