Kat Rocha Hard question. Money is always a good incentive... but I don't think that is what you are asking.

I am an editor by profession, writer by hobby.
I play a game with my husband where we watch a bad movie and then deconstruct it. Try to figure out why is was bad and if it can be saved. It's a great way to build stories and get ideas for my own work.
Kat Rocha A short story for an upcoming anthology (cyber fairytale) and a science fiction novella about an alchemist.
Kat Rocha I work on other parts and come back to the "hard" parts later. Sometimes you do have to slog through the mudd and you may spend several hours typing words you will never use but that is how you find the ones you will use.
Kat Rocha Read the classics. You need to know where you are coming from to understand where you want to go. No idea is "unique". What is unique is where you take it. Try not to work on "style" or "being clever". That will come later. Focus on telling a good story. Listen to constructive criticism and don't be afraid to fail. That is how you get better.
