Charity Becker Billy pulled his damp covers tighter over his sweating, overheated body, making sure his face was covered, and he trembled at the thought that any appendage or inch of skin may be exposed to the air and the monster under his bed. Little did Billy know, the dampness on his blankets was not his sweat at all, and the suffocating heat was not coming from his own body--the bed had already been swallowed whole.
Charity Becker You just have to keep moving forward. Sometimes the story sticks in your brain, refusing to come out onto the page. You have to push through it. Open a new document and start writing something else for a while. Something is there that needs to come out, so let it. Write how frustrated you are, explore why and how you came to that place. Don't hold anything back, and don't edit yourself. Then step away, have some tea or coffee or whatever warm drink does it for you, and then give yourself permission to let go of whatever is blocking you. Do this as many times as it takes, but do not give up.
Charity Becker I get to make up stories for a living! I sit in my jammies, sipping coffee or tea, making up crazy tales to wow my readers or scare them or touch their hearts. My words have an effect on people <3
Charity Becker Sit down and write. Doesn't matter if it's crap, keep writing. The only way to get better is to keep at it, keep trying. You have to train your muse, your brain, your fingers--all of it needs to learn how to work together to create your worlds and your characters. That takes practice and patience. Oh, and HIRE AN EDITOR! Even if you think you don't need one, YOU DO. Every writer needs at least one professional editor; I have three!
Charity Becker I'm working on the 5th book in my horror series, "Presence: August Heat", the 2nd book in the Bird's Town series which is being turned into a video game (due out Summer, 2014) by Joyrocks, and I'm also working on another video game project for Nekki, "Shadow Fight 2". On the side, I'm poking around with my fantasy trilogy, a sci-fi romance, and a couple non-fiction books on writing.
Charity Becker Almost always music! Lyrics don't matter much when it comes to inspiration for me; it's all about the music itself, the melody, the tempo, the overall feel of each song. Every one of my books has a soundtrack! When I'm working on a new book, I find songs that speak to me and help me stay on the right path for that story, and I play them on an almost constant loop.
Charity Becker That would be Brother Toad and the Giants. It's based on a real toad who lives in my garden, actually! He and I became buddies a couple of years ago--he's not afraid of me at all, allows me to hold him, and he sings for me, too. I wondered what brought him to my garden, and then my mind went off on a wild tale about Brother Toad's journey to the land of the giants. It was a lot of fun to write and illustrate!
