J.W. Hicks Has to be Mr Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet.
J.W. Hicks My writing's futuristic, so I feel it needs a different feel to both style and vocabulary. I want it to be… other. In Rats I aimed for a pared down style, an intimate close quarter grab-your attention kind of approach. Oh, and I love neologisms, but they have to be easily assimilated and quite obvious to the reader, e.g. snaff - from snaffle, to steal. Too much gobbledegook leaves the reader confused and unwilling to read further.
There are no traditional swearwords in Rats. I invent new ones, such as frinking, which derives from the name of a traitor – The Hon Stuart Frink.
Modern day swearing will date, whereas inventions don't.
I hope this answer satisfies.
J.W. Hicks I do something active – take a long walk by the canal or in the nearby wild-life conservation area. If that fails I start on some serious house cleaning. My intense dislike of cleaning always seems to generate ideas. I wonder why?
