David Dalrymple Keep writing. It doesn't even matter if its good. Mental paralysis begets more paralysis. There's a term for the phenomenon that happens when a skilled athlete all of a sudden loses the ability to perform a task. Like a pitcher who can't throw the ball. It's called "the Yips". When I get stuck, I have to remind myself that I always eventually get unstuck, so in the meantime, keep putting words to "paper".
David Dalrymple Creating worlds, characters, conversations, and the excitement that comes with knowing that every time someone new reads the book, the whole thing comes alive again. There is also contentment for me in that creative space with a hot latte and a laptop, a notebook and a pen.
David Dalrymple Don't worry about being polished early on or whether people may or may not like it. Just write. But, along the way, I learned that there is an art to writing that isn't always intuitive. I read a lot about the craft writing as I went along. Lastly, because what comes out naturally at first feels so good, it's hard to be be critical of your own work. Don't be afraid to hit the delete button. I have whole chapters in the trash but writing them was valuable and necessary.

David Dalrymple I seem to find my artistic inspiration in three spaces: nature, driving alone in the truck, or in quaint coffee shops. Once the ideas start flowing, I need to be intentional about making time to keep the energy alive. Whether I write a whole scene or only jot a few thoughts, I just like to keep the process going forward.
David Dalrymple I lived in Philadelphia for six years during medical school and residency. There was a substantial and, at the time, pretty high profile mob presence in the city. The idea hit me as I sipped a latte in a West Michigan cafe years later.
