Dialogue is fun for me. I sort of picture it in my head as if it were a conversation between me and someone else in that situation, taking out all the societal pressures to say the right thing at the same time! I learned from Western author Gary McCarthy that dialogue works well when you place the descriptor in front of the quote on occasion to break up the routine of "she said" at the end of every bit of dialogue. For some reason that always stuck with me.

To be honest I get most of my inspiration from reading other authors. Seeing what they accomplish gets me revved up to do the same. Staring at books on my shelf also helps, as does a pot of coffee and a quiet house.
