Helen Epstein When I look back on how I started writing what I remember most clearly is being sent away to a summer camp for inner-city kids in the 1950s (I was then considered a refugee child and we lived in the middle of Manhattan). Every afternoon we had a rest period during which we were required to write letters to family and friends. I remember howmuch I loved the stationary and the fountain pen I used, as well as the thrill of putting my thoughts and feelings into words and then getting responses back. That was the beginning.
