Jeanne Gehret Always having something interesting to think about! The 19th century setting of my books is just far enough away as to be quite unfamiliar to us. Every day, it seems, I learn about an object, custom, or person who fascinates me, and then, if possible, I work it into my story. Since I'm writing a trilogy, things that don't fit into the current book always have a chance of appearing in a later one. Courting customs of the Victorians were good for many hours of amusement.
Jeanne Gehret When I get stuck it's usually because I can't figure out how to get from point A to point B. For instance, I may need someone to be wounded in the Navy in the Civil War. What were Navy ships doing? What were the hazards? If they were injured when a ship's boiler blew up, how did boilers on steamships work? Once I have the answers, I begin to ask questions of my characters like "What would happen if..." and I am off and writing again.
Jeanne Gehret I am revising my 1994 book Susan B. Anthony and Justice For All with a new title and new cover. Of course, I'll add at least one new scene.
