The inspiration for my current project, "Sailing into Retirement," came from the realization that there is a large number of recently retired or soon-to-retire people considering living on a boat. Since there were few books addressing this body of readers, I figured I had better write one.

I usually just start writing and let the ideas flow. This means I throw out most of the stuff I write. I also try to lead an active life, do interesting things, meet interesting people, and travel to interesting places. All this is powerful inspiration, and the biggest problem is deciding what I just don't have the time to write about.

My current contract is with McGraw Hill/International Marine for a major book on retirement on a boat. "Sailing into Retirement" is due to be released in November.

Learn as much as you can about the writer's craft then don't submit anything for publication that hasn't been through the hands of a competent editor. Rejection is devastating to beginners, and the best way to avoid it is to never submit anything that isn't as close to perfect as you can make it.

The wonderful thing about writing as a profession is the freedom to pursue just about any lifestyle you can dream up. The downside is the uncertainty as your future is only as secure as your next project.
