Read. And read more. Read authors who inspire you, analyze their work, even their sentence structure and vocabulary. And do your research even if it's a grind. I assume that the person reading my book knows all there is to know about the subject so I better get it right.

There was an extended period between Tom Robbins books, and not knowing whether he would write another crazy novel, I was inspired to write one in the Robbins' vein. Kurt Vonnegut has been a big influence too.
