Wallace Kaufman The tropical island at the North Pole as described in Lady Margaret Cavendish's book The Blazing World, perhaps the first sci fi book in English, 17th C.
Wallace Kaufman I think I should commit suicide or that I should quit writing if I can't sit down and spend at least a few hours writing. If I can't write on my main project, I at least write in my journal or write a blog or article about something of interest. I reassure myself I can write.
Wallace Kaufman Get some hands on experience in parts of your town, state, or any country; live with people who are not like you, even people who make you uncomfortable. If you find yourself reading only articles and books you agree with, your brain is dying. Confirmation bias is the opium of the people. If you find yourself writing a phrase or sentence that sounds familiar and is used often, your writing is probably stale.
Wallace Kaufman Not enough, and too much. I am updating my history of environmental thinking that was published in 1995 as No Turning Back. I have a nearly finished manuscript, A Steller Journey, about Georg Steller, the world's most intrepid field biologist and scientist on Bering's 1741 voyage to North America. I have an idea for a children's book of provocative and humous animal pictures. And I have folders full of notes for what it takes to live a true green life.
Wallace Kaufman Living here at the edge of forest and marsh overlooking a deep water slough (tidal river), I began taking pictures. I had also been working for some 10 years with a translator in Iran, Alireza Taghdarreh, on his Farsi edition of Walden. Working with Ali I began looking at Persian forms and realized the possibility of using the 4 line ruba'i (plural rubaiyat) as captions that catch the mystery, essence, or question in the image. Facing the picture and the caption are one page narrative essays that form an easily readable memoir. It's a new form for a new way of reading.
