I give myself permission to write crap, which is not easy for a professional editor.

I'm still new at this, since as of this writing I'm still several weeks shy of publication. So far the best thing is that I feel inspired to connect with other people--friends, strangers, fellow writers, media folk, readers--in a way that I never have before. I have a feeling the process of being published is going to stretch me in all sorts of good ways, although I expect it won't always be comfortable.

Read incessantly, and write whenever you can.

I'm not writing a new book at the moment. However, to keep my creditors at bay I am editing books by other people. Truth be told, I rather enjoy it.

I fret about my deadline. This seems like a great opportunity to name drop. I edited several books by Douglas Adams, and one of his favorite statements was, "I love deadlines. I love the whooshing sound they make when they go by."

I'm an independent book editor. One day I was visiting a book publisher when I noticed an oversized book on his shelf about "The Wizard of Oz." In that moment I had an epiphany, which I blurted out loud. I said, "I've edited a lot of brilliant authors in my long career, but everything I learned from them was right there in that film I first watched when I was eleven years old!" He loved the idea and suggested I write up a book proposal. I did, and here we are five years later, but that's another story.
