Fredrick Tucker When I was twelve years old, I became interested in classic films and vintage TV shows, especially the character actors who appeared in them. Alice Pearce was particularly intriguing to me because I found that virtually nothing had been written about her, whether in older books I found in the public library or in newer ones available from the Movie Book Club or Nostalgia Book Club. So I began researching her life and career as a hobby more than 45 years ago. At first, it was a very private passion. I mainly relied on old newspaper and magazine articles which fellow fans shared with me. Then I discovered that the NY Public Library would provide photocopies from their clippings files. As time went on and I began to interview those who knew Miss Pearce, I knew that some day I wanted to write her biography. Eventually I accessed her private papers at the University of Southern California. By this time I had amassed a considerable collection of photos of Miss Pearce and had maintained communication with several of her closest friends. All the while, my pursuit was necessarily relegated to the spare time I found on weekends or during vacations. Once I retired from teaching, I was able to tackle the project I'd held dear for so long.
