Christine Sleeter Take my dog for a walk. Honestly! I usually don't get writer's block, but when I do, my mind often sorts things out while I'm out walking (usually with the dog). Sometimes talking about what I'm working on and where I'm stuck with a friend helps to, except friends can give suggestions that end up not being very helpful. The solution to writer's block is in my own head, and providing unstructured time to let my mind wander usually lets me connect some mental dots needed to get going again.
Christine Sleeter Many of my specific ideas come while I'm walking the dog. I always have writing projects in front of me, but sometimes when I sit down to write, ideas don't exactly flow. It's often when I'm doing something else -- dog walking seems to be a big one -- that my imagination takes off, and I come back to my desk with fresh inspiration. (Thank you, Maya!)
Christine Sleeter The idea came out of extensive examination I had been doing on my own family history. The more I talked with people about what I was learning, the more I saw parallels between the past and present. In figuring out how to play with those parallels, this book gradually took shape.
