Ed Davis From a very lively conversation between my wife and myself about the role of "legends" in our culture, especially musical ones, who often lead very confined, isolated lives. Made me think of Bob Dylan who became a huge inspiration for a redemptive tale about an estranged father and son.
Ed Davis By having a regular schedule (but not too regular) when it's simply time to write--or attend to writing duties. And by long walks in nearby Glen Helen, a 1,000-acre nature preserve, which has given me countless poems, stories, ideas.
Ed Davis A novel with a female protagonist who travels an hour or so south of the city where she was raised to find a completely different (Appalachian) culture. She's intrigued, enticed--and gets to know a recent widower and his peculiar young daughter. Pretty soon she's hooked on this family and wants to know their secrets. Meanwhile, she's receiving transmissions from some very old oak trees, which help her know what is the next right step.
Ed Davis ReadReadRead, then WriteWriteWrite, millions of words to find those few thousand that are precious and worth sharing. Also, persistence is more important than talent. Yes, you need some of the latter, but so many more talented writer than I have given up...when I didn't. Pretty soon it weaves its way into your lifestyle.
Ed Davis Getting to discover what it is you know but don't know you know, through depth exploration of your unconscious. Helps make you a more compassionate--and more whole--human being.
Ed Davis Just lower your standards--seriously. Something will come; even if it's a terrible draft, you can revise--that's where the best writing occurs, anyway.
