Kaye Hopkins Many years ago, my best friend and I rented an older apartment in Las Vegas that was about a half mile from the Strip. It was obvious from the layout, appliances, and color schemes (pink bathtub, black and pink bathroom tiles, aqua stove, etc.) that it had been there since the 1950s.

We had several very odd things happen there, like moved items, a battery-operated clock that gained time instead of losing time, and strange noises. The most mysterious thing that happened, though, was one evening when I went to my sister's house right after work.

I hadn't been there an hour when our mother called almost panic stricken. She said she'd tried to call me at my apartment and that it sounded like I'd picked up of the phone, tried to speak, and then dropped the phone. She'd called my sister to go to my apartment to "save" me because, clearly, something had happened to me. When she learned that I was at my sister's and not at home, we reasoned that she'd dialed a wrong number.

My best friend worked different hours than I did and didn't get home until after six in the evening. I was still at my sister's when she got home. And when she did, she called my sister's house to ask me why I'd taken the phone off the hook and left it sitting on the table next to the cradle.

We never did figure out what happened, but one theory is that when my mother called, a spirit tried to answer the phone!
