Here's an analogy~consider a moment your life like a kaleidoscope, rather, its image raised to the light. A novelist might simply (and/or carefully) twist the tube and create a different focus (to concentrate on). Using one's experiences--and researched information--is a little (a very little) like this. But you ask for a specific mystery in my life. It would depend on whether the mystery were germane to my story's purpose.
