My advice for aspiring writers is simple: Never give up. I watched an interview with Mike Meyers shortly before I sold my first book, at a time when I was ready to quit. The interviewer asked him what his secret to success was, and he simply replied, "I never quit." Wow. His words resonated with me, and I doubled up on my efforts to query agents and publishers. What happened? Shortly after I decided to dig in my heels, I sold three books in two genres and signed with my first choice agent. Dreams really do come true...as long as you don't give up.

The best thing about being a writer is meeting other people who love stories as much as I do. Readers! I love meeting readers, exchanging emails, and sharing in their passion for the stories they love. After all, I write because I love to read.

I've never been a believer in writer's block, but after a medical issue two years ago, I lost my ability to write and read for a short while. I had to relearn my process and discovered that writing in a journal was the key to unlocking my creativity. I now am a HUGE fan of writing longhand and own way too many journals...but hey, I have an excuse! So, to answer the question, whenever I feel blocked, I reach for pen and paper.

Hi, Beth! Thank you so much for your kind words and for your question. Broken Pieces was an emotionally draining book to write, but one that was extremely important to me. I wanted to honor my friend and the battle she fought, and I wanted to do so realistically but respectfully. I'd planned a different subplot, but when life took a turn, I realized I had the chance to use this book as a platform to share awareness.
