Don't listen to anyone. Do your thing in your own voice that you hear in your head; unfiltered. Get it down, then fight to keep the vision pure. Make your own rules. Go for truth, truth, truth. "This is how it really is/was." Take advice when you need it to get your work out, if need be, to put food on the table. Otherwise, compete only with yourself and don't worry about how it happened for someone else. You can't replicate someone else's journey. Yours will be yours, with it's own failures and dumb luck and triumph.

I was thinking a lot about how different my childhood in the 1960's was from today's kids, and with the different thoughts about sexuality back then, how really my whole upbringing was like night and day to todays mores. I began to type out my experiences and it flowed so well with my voice that the next thing you knew, I had a whole fictional memoir novel.
