I step away from the page, take a break, go for a walk, do anything but stare at the page, then come back to it fresh another day. The block usually works itself out, most often just as I'm about to fall asleep at night, so I always have a notebook next to my bed to jot down my thoughts in case I can't remember the next day.

The ability to live vicariously through your own imagination, with no boundaries to how you behave on paper. And having a good excuse to read as many books as you like in the name of "research". No one criticises a writer for ignoring chores and picking up a book instead in the middle of the day!

Keep writing, even when you think there is no hope of seeing your dream realised. And be prepared to use criticism and rejection positively to better your work rather than as a hindrance. It takes hard work, perseverance and a lot of faith in your own imagination and ability, but the harder you work, the more enjoyable it is when a reader tells you they loved your story.

I'm inspired by the people I observe around me and the public faces we see versus the private personalities. And I just love writing and creating stories, so the process itself drives me.

The book I am currently writing began with an image in my head of a group of people sitting around a table and the journey they had all taken to get to that point. From there, it evolved into a story about the choices we make - whether good or bad - in order to achieve our ambitions.
