Mary Sojourner I'd go to the Flagstaff, Arizona, 1985, in my first novel, Sisters of the Dream. That little mountain town no longer exists. Its been eaten up by developer greed and the metastasizing local university.

Mary Sojourner I read to survive a frightening childhood. I read for hours every night. Those practices are the groundwork for my writing. I read something that angers me. Mary Sojourner I've realized that as I move through life, I record - what I see, hear, taste, smell, feel, people and landscape. I apparently store that information unconsciously. Sometime down the road - a day, a week, a year, ten years - I feel pressure to write and when I pick up a pen or put my hands on the keys, what I have recorded and stored pours out. 29 emerged from a vivid time in my life; from learning about the devastation corporate solar power is doing to the Mojave desert and from the generosity of a Chemehuevi friend in sharing his culture with me. It was not so much an idea that propelled this book, as it was a vow to the story.
