MariNaomi Michael Mouse and John the gynecologist in Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City series. Their relationship feels so romantic yet realistic--they go through some hard times, but their love endures.
MariNaomi When you sit down to write a story, don't worry about what other people may or may not like. Write what moves you! Your passion (or lack thereof) will come through on the page.
MariNaomi It helps me to have multiple projects going on at once. That way, when I run out of steam with one project, I can put it aside for another, and come back to it when I'm feeling it again. (Also, rereading what I've got so far is really helpful.)
MariNaomi The events of my next graphic memoir, Turning Japanese, occurred almost twenty years ago. At the time, when I decided to get to know my Japanese side via working at hostess bars, I consoled a small part of my brain (the small, scared part) with the idea that if worse came to worst I could someday write about it. But by the time I was in the thick of it, I found the whole thing so tedious that writing about it was the last thing I wanted to do. It took another 10-15 years before I could look back on it as something of interest, and see how everything fit together as part of a larger narrative. Perspective is key when writing memoir!
MariNaomi I'm currently touring and promoting my newest book, Dragon's Breath and Other True Stories. During my rare "free" moments to draw, I'm currently working on a young adult graphic novel trilogy involving teenagers and space aliens. Look for it in stores in, like, fifty years. (Because drawing takes forever!)
