The book I'm working on (Lizard Wong Book 2) was a combination of things. A news story about an odd event, time spent in a particular place and a couple of interests of mine all coalesced into something.

I read a lot and yet I still find there a times when I want a particular kinds of story and I can't find one that really scratches that itch. There's that day when you really want a spooky ghost story but all the ones you find veer off into aliens or ancient demons set to conquer the world. When I can't find what I want, it inspires me to write it.

Write. Write for yourself. Tell the stories you wish were available for you to read.

I don't really get writer's block for new ideas. I have too many ideas. In a story, outlining, roughing out scene and taking some time away to think about how something fits in the whole tends fix any writer's block issues.

If there is something that interests you, you don't have to spend 10,000 hours becoming an expert. You can simply research and write about it to see if it still holds your interest. A character can be as accomplished or vulnerable as you want them to be.
