Avril Joy I'm often inspired by place. So travelling and visting new places, or re-visting old haunts often set my creative juices going. I usually start with place and then look for the people who inhabit it and their story.
Avril Joy The idea for Sometimes A River Song came some years back when I watched a documentary programme about a fast disappearing river boat community in Arkansas USA. The place and the way of life on the water intrigued me but I didn't come back to it until I started writing short stories using the setting. One of which was shortlitsed for the Raymond Carver Short Story Prize nad one for The Manchester prize for Fiction. These listings gave me the confidence to carry on and start on the novel.
