One of the most fun memories I have from childhood is the witch's finger. When I was a child, my daycare was the home of an elderly neighbor and her wheelchair-bound daughter. There were a lot of other kids there. We played outside most of the day.
She stored a lot of junk in her locked barn. The wood was so old that it separated. We enjoyed peeking through. There was an old, rusted metal toolbox. One day, we noticed something poking out of the toolbox that looked like the tip of a green index finger with a sharp, black fingernail. When we returned to show other kids, the finger was gone.
While it's easily written off as the overactive imagination of children, the witch's finger is a childhood adventure for Quinn and Louis in my novel Handlebars.

Write. Ignore the mistakes and put a first draft down. To paraphrase Neil Gaiman, you can always edit a first draft. You can't edit what you don't write.

Inspiration comes from anywhere. I've been inspired by misreading a church sign as I drove past or when I watched feuding pundits.

"Handlebars" was born during the Clinton/Trump campaign while listening to the Flobots song of the same name. I couldn't imagine either of these two ever riding a bicycle and enjoying life. I wanted to chart the course of a character from a humble childhood to global villainy/heroism.

I am wrapping up the first draft of horror novella "I, Tess" and am sprinting to a 2023 finish on my fantasy novel "Tusk."

Mommy always said there was no such thing as the boogie man. I wonder what else mommy was wrong about.
