P.L. Blair Sit down and write! Don't wait for "the Muse" to knock on the door. Think about the kind of book you want to write - and what kinds of books you like to read. That's your starting point if you don't already have an idea firm in your mind. Grab an image to get your brain engaged, then start writing. Books are a lot like life. They're about cause and effect, action/reaction. Something happens. How do your characters respond to the event? That's your plot - or the start of one. Equally important - Have faith in yourself!
P.L. Blair I'm bringing a dragon to Sheridan, Wyoming! (Which is where I live at present.) This will be book 7 in my Portals series, by the way. Book 5, Unholy Cause, is with my publisher, and book 6, A Plague of Leprechauns, is finished and waiting in the wings until my publisher has finished reading "Cause."
P.L. Blair I daydream. I turn my imagination loose (I've been accused of having too much of that), and think about what kind of book I would like to read. Then there's the detective (police procedural) element, which is fueled by not only years of reading and watching "cop shows" on TV but also by my day-job as a reporter.
P.L. Blair All of my Portals books draw on characters/creatures from our own legends and myths. Then I throw in my second love - detective novels. Sister Hoods, my most recently released book, started with an image in my mind - a band of nymphs and satyrs robbing a bank. Then it was just a matter of coming up with a reason they would do this, and throwing in a few complications for my heroes - human police detective Kat Morales and her partner, Tevis, an elf - as they work to solve the case.
