The Zoya Septet is a story in 7 parts — 6 novels and one book of poetry. The award winning and positively reviewed series has now reached the 5th novel. The book of poetry is #6 in the series and ties in with both the 5th and 7th novels.
I am working on the 5th volume which is a contemporary novel set in Eastern Ukraine. I am dealing with characters caught up in the war between Ukraine and Russia and Donetsk. I want the voice to be like the voice in All Quiet on the Western Front. Right now my squad of Ukrainian soldiers have returned from the front and are relaxing at an army base behind the lines.
They don’t want to talk about the war. They just want to eat, drink, sleep, joke, play chess and open parcels from home that are filled with cookies and candy and cake. David Zahara looks forward to handwritten letters from his girlfriend in Chicago. Conflict and warfare are far away. For now.

I don't really experience that because I just start writing. I know it's not set in concrete, and I can change anything, so I don't get uptight about the process. I think anxiety about what to write, or what style or voice to use, is what stops up some authors up. I always have ideas jumping around in my head so I just choose to let a few of them out. I may not even keep them in the story, but they get me going and keep me going and that's what counts.
