Christopher Stookey A "longboard" is a type of surfboard. The two main surfboard types are shortboards and longboards. Shortboards are faster, more maneuverable, turn much better. Longboards are easier to paddle, more stable, and you can "walk the board," eg. "hang 10." Many shortboarders look down on longboarders--they say "longboarding isn't surfing at all." In my view, shortboarding is high-adrenaline surfing, while longboarding is "soul surfing" (I can hear the shortboarders laughing now).

I recently finished a great book on surfing, if you're interested. , by William Finnegan.

Thanks for the question!
Christopher Stookey I've always been compelled to write. Since I was a kid, I've kept journals and written stories. It's an inspiration that comes from somewhere deep within--I think it's in my genes.

I'm also inspired to write when I think there's a story that needs to be told: a social injustice that needs some light, an emotion I want to work out, a feeling of empathy I want to share.

And I'm inspired by the great books I read. There are so many times I've said to myself, "I wish I'd written that." Then I set out, the best I can, to emulate in my own feeble way the writers who have dazzled me.
Christopher Stookey Of course, the best thing about being a writer is the freedom. You make your own hours, pick your own topics, show up to work in your underwear. Your office can be anywhere--your study at home, sitting on a rock at the beach, the local Starbucks (in which case the underwear option is probably not a good idea). The creative process, itself, is also a great thing about being a writer. Sitting down in front of a blank page can be daunting thing. However, for me, there are few things more satisfying than creating something honest and heartfelt out of nothing.
