Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?
Jane Peyton My most recent book is The Philosophy of Cocktails (published June 2023) and my publisher asked me to write it. It is one in The Philosophy of ...' history series. My titles The Philosophy of Gin and The Philosophy of Beer were published in 2020 and 2021.

For the cocktail history book I decided to focus on the factors that led to the popularity of cocktails and I was amazed to discover the role of American women in the late 19th century in popularising cocktails as a drink for both sexes.

What are you currently working on?
Jane Peyton My first novel 'Sole Brethren: If The Shoe Fits' is published in February 2023 and I am currently writing a sequel called 'Sole Brethren: Left To Their Own Devices'. It's written under a pen-name - B. A Summer because I write non-fiction under my real name (Jane Peyton).

What’s the best thing about being a writer?
Jane Peyton Having a conversation on paper with the future reader.

I love words and have so much pleasure from finding the right ones. My favourite part of the process is editing and improving what I have written. It always makes me think of advice a friend gave me with my first book - she said 'Writing is rewriting'.

How do you deal with writer’s block?
Jane Peyton I go for a walk and the repetitive action opens up my imagination. I take paper & pen everywhere I go so I can scribble down the ideas that have come into my head as I walk. Then I can't wait to get back to my desk and start writing!
