When my mother was a child, a great deal of money was left to her father by a benefactor in Canada. My grandfather, a very proud man, who had grown up an orphan after being abandoned by his father and the early death of his mother, refused the money. We’ll never know the identity of the benefactor but I have my theories…

Keep going! It can be hard to be inspired and motivated at times, so write what you love, and write from the heart. If you can connect emotionally with your work, your readers will also connect with it.

My next novel will be a big change in time, place and subject. I can’t say too much at this stage, other than it will be an homage to the nineteenth century novel, and will be published in January 2025. It has been a real passion project, and I’m very excited to share more with you in due course. I hope you all love it as much as I do!

So far, my novels have all been set in the past and so most of my inspiration comes from studying history and reading biographies, visiting museums and art galleries. Images can inspire as much as the written word. I’m particularly interested in the day to day details of people’s lives, in things we can all relate to, no matter what century or decade we were born in, and so even the most mundane comment passed down through time can inspire an idea or a character. As a sense of place is also important to me, travelling is also a great inspiration, whether it’s to somewhere just around the corner, or further afield.

The idea for THE FRENCH AFFAIR was inspired by the research I did for my first novel, THE SECRETS WE KEEP. I learned so much about the brave endeavours of the women who risked their lives during the German occupation of France during World War Two, that I wanted to explore their stories further. Although my work is entirely fictional, I wanted to pay tribute to those who fought so bravely for the freedoms we enjoy today.
