Thai cuisine is a huge part of my life, especially as a diaspora author and daughter of an immigrant. It's a big part of how I connected to my culture, eating my mom's food, learning her recipes, and so on. I knew I had to include mentions of some of my favorite dishes in the novel. Food is love.
That theme of "food is love" also relates to the Hungry Ghosts featured in the book. Insatiable hunger is a divine punishment, and ties into the questions posed of redemption and forgiveness.
