I talk with my grandchildren. They have a lot of issues that need to be addressed. Read a newspaper. Go to the quilting club and listen to the conversations around me. Hear the heart of those who rejoice or grieve.

As a writer, I gain a platform for speaking. I love to be a storyteller to a live audience. Speaking gives me the feedback, but writing gives me a place to pour out my passion. I love meeting people and talking with them about the issues that my books present. I want to hear their stories.

My current work in progress is an historical novel based on the drama of the Dust Bowl. Using my mother's journals and letters when she lived in the 1930's in Colorado, I have created the tastes, smells, sights and sounds of a very difficult time of history. Of course, an inspirational tone weaves throughout this novel which depicts the struggles of the people against nature.

I get inspired to write by watching the news and reading the newspapers. So many issues in our urban society need to be addressed in some manner. All of my books deal with common societal difficulties. PTSD is highlighted in Miss Bee and the Do Bees, caretaking of an MS patient is a subplot in Second Chances. Poverty and immigration are issues in A Mother's Song. My journal gave all the vignettes for Teaching Diamonds in the Tough.

My most recent book is A Mother's Song, and it is historical fiction based on the orphan trains. I became interested in the orphan trains when I visited a museum in Minnesota where the riders had been adopted. After years of researching, I wrote A Mother's Song to show the biological mothers who let their children ride the train and the women who adopted them. Of course, the girl who loves both mothers is highlighted. Accurate historical information gives this novel authenticity and heart wrenching emotions.
