The basis for the novel I'm working on was a personal experience that took me completely by surprise. I won't give away what it was just yet. But having always wanted to write fiction, having been a nonfiction author and journalist for the past 30 years, it eased me into attempting a novel by tweaking a true story so that it became fictionalized.

That's rather like asking, how do you breathe. It's all I've ever wanted to do. I cannot imagine a day going by without doing something connected with reading, researching, and writing.

My first novel. After 15 nonfiction books, as author and co-author, I wanted to challenge myself. I've been working on it for close to two years now and think I've finally got the hang of it. It's such a joy to be learning a new skill.

Read. I cannot imagine how anyone can aspire to become a writer unless they love books and eat them up! By absorbing how successful writers execute their craft--even subconciously--it does make you a better writer yourself.

Working with words. I love words, and always have since I was very young and took great delight in trawling the dictionary for a word I didn't already know then looking for immediate opportunities to use it in conversation or my writing. It's still thrilling to find and use words that are new to me.

I don't try to force it, but choose to do something completely different. Usually it's walking the dog. At which point I generally get the inspiration I need, so I'm writing away the moment I get back home. Quite magical how that happens :-)
