I get up each day and write. Some days I feel like it and other days I don't, but I do it anyway. Sometimes the writing makes it into a project. Often it doesn't. In many ways, it doesn't matter. It's the process that's most important. I consider writing a daily practice, kind of like exercise or meditation. Not that I do those things, but I hear that some people who are into them do them daily.

The book I just finished, You're You, was inspired by my day job. I work at a drop-in centre for homeless and at-risk youth where I run a meal program. We have a teeny-tiny budget for food, so most of what we work with is donated. We also rely on a lot of volunteer work. That got me thinking a lot about food waste and food access. I've also had some unique opportunities to work with our local food bank and find the folks there and the work they do so inspiring. All of that got me thinking that it'd be kinda cool to write a romance about a couple of teens who volunteer at the food bank and really connect over food justice issues. The book also looks at bisexuality from the point of view of a girl who identifies as a lesbian and is therefore troubled by her crush on a guy. I wanted to write about that because for the last little while I've been feeling like it's really easy to get caught up in an idea of oneself. Falling for someone can really challenge a person. That's certainly true for my most recent main character, Freyja. So, yeah. Food and love.

Keep writing. That's the most important part. As with anything creative, there are bound to be good days and bad. You will inevitably disappoint yourself along the way and that's when it's especially important to keep writing. Try not to pay too much attention to other people's skepticism or your own inner critic. Creativity is more powerful than negativity.
