Morgan Spellman If I have an idea but I'm stuck on getting it down on paper, music helps me more than anything. If I'm really stuck I'll go for a walk (while listening to music), but most often with a good soundtrack, a cup of tea, and a notebook, I can get into writing.
Morgan Spellman Read, read, read! Seriously. The more you read, the more you'll get a sense of what you enjoy. After reading books that I love, I like to revisit them with my 'writer's hat' on, and look closely at how it's structured, how information is delivered, what specific words are used, etc. There are tons of resources out there (I've put together a list of some of my favorite on my website) from books to podcasts to exercise worksheets. I still think the best way to learn is by studying the books you have at home (or at your local library).
Morgan Spellman The idea to have a mystery set at a summer camp was inspired by a trip to the NC mountains back in early 2023, when I was first plotting the series. I drove past an outdoor summer camp and I thought 'what a great place for a murder mystery'! I then read as many summer camp murder mysteries as I could find. I especially enjoyed the Last Time I Lied by Riley Sager and The Box in the Woods by Maureen Johnson.
