Janet A. Wilson I have always written and kept diaries and journals since I was eight. So I had a journal for all my travels and also had thousands of photos and hours of video. So my challenge was, which journey should I write about in my memoir.
Janet A. Wilson My husband and I drove 50,000 miles (80,000Km) around Africa and then we drove from Alaska to the most southern town in the world in Argentina. This trip took us 16 months. We've given many presentations and regardless of the topic or the audience, the most common question is, "How on earth did you put up with each other alone in a car for sixteen months?" How we managed as a couple became the theme of my memoir.
Janet A. Wilson Just write. I didn't fuss with the grammar and I am not good with spelling. So I just wrote my first crappy draft of over 100,000 words in 6 months. Then the editing began. But some writers are more organized and do have a plan, so just do what is best for you.
Janet A. Wilson Well apart from the actual writing. I would have to say meeting other writers and authors, and their support and encouragement. My first draft was well over 100,000 words but they encouraged me to really tighten my writing.
The editors that guided me, the workshops and seminars I attended, it was truly a welcoming and supportive community.
